Diesel Diagnostics

Modern diesel systems report a lot of information. A diagnostic code can narrow the search, but it should be considered alongside symptoms, operating conditions, and a proper inspection.

Record the code before clearing it.

Step 1

Capture exact SPN/FMI or dashboard message

Step 2

Note when the warning appears and whether power changes

Step 3

Avoid clearing codes before the underlying issue is assessed

Symptoms add context

Record whether a warning appears at startup, under load, during regeneration, or intermittently. Note changes in power, fuel use, smoke, or temperature.

One code can have several causes

A code points toward a monitored condition; it does not always identify a failed part. Wiring, sensors, connectors, air or fuel supply, and related systems may need evaluation.

When a warning is urgent

Follow the truck manufacturer’s stop or derate guidance. If there is a red stop-engine alert, overheating, low oil pressure, or another unsafe condition, park safely and seek qualified help.
